2019 Fixtures Announced

The 2019 WAFL Premiership Season is set to be a big one for the Perth Football Club. 

Our 120th anniversary year will kick off with a home game against the newly formed West Coast Eagles WAFL side. Rounds two and three will see us go to battle with South Fremantle and Swan Districts, before we return to Lathlain Park for the round four Anzac Day game against East Perth.

The Anzac Day round will see the Demons play under lights in a Thursday night game, while also marking our 60th year of being known as the "Demons" and calling Lathlain Park home.

The 2019 season will see us play ten home games, two of which will be Thursday night games.

Sports Nutrition at the PFC

The Perth Football Club have engaged nutritionist Julie Meek to run a sports nutrition program for the senior playing group in 2019.  This innovation has come about through our season review from 2018 and consultation with our Club Doctor, Joe Henry and Physio, Brett Fletcher.

The program will look at not only game day preparation, but will also help with injury prevention and rehabilitation.

Our introduction took place this week and will continue throughout the season. Julie and her assistant Liana Nici will be responsible for the implementation of the program, which will include diets, skin fold testing, recovery drinks after training and games. The session will also include food advice and direction for pre-game and also post game recovery.

This addition complements our introduction in 2018 of Lindsay Bunn, our running coach, and continues to provide our senior playing group with more off-field assistance to increase our on ground output and ultimately a continual move up the WAFL ladder.

2019 RECRUITMENT UPDATE

Gordon Narrier Returns to the Perth Football Club

Gordon Narrier was drafted from the Demons to the North Melbourne Football Club in the 2017 draft. Gordon is a speedy forward with exciting outside run and penetration with the ball into our forward half. He can be a damaging midfielder who will add to our ability to improve our scoring output. 

“It is unfortunate for Gordon that his AFL stint only lasted for one year, but we are fortunate that he returns to the Perth Football Club for our 2019 season,” Dale Ballantyne said on the signing. "While we are glad to have him back, we support Gordon in his ambitions to return to the AFL."

Perth welcome third generation Demon

The Club has signed Chris Bryan who is joining us from Subiaco Football Club. Bryan is a third generation Perth Football Club player, following in the footsteps of his grandfather and father. His grandfather, Ken, played in the 1955 Perth Premiership team.

“I’m proud to be a Demon and following the family tradition,” Bryan commented about his signing.

“I can’t wait to get stuck into it and join the boys as we get stuck into the pre-season.”

Bryan has transferred from Subiaco after 24 League games. He adds some quality and depth to our backline and can move into a midfield role if required.  Chris brings some finals experience to our squad, which is vitally important as we look to continue our improved form from 2018 and set our sights on more end of season action in the finals.

Matthew Rogers returns to Perth

Matt approached the Club about the possibility of returning to Lathlain Park in 2019, signing a three year contract. He has an ambition to add to his 33 League games with the Demons. Matt has respected leadership qualities, while his toughness and physical exertion around the football will add to our forward half pressure and provide some surety to his fellow forwards.
 
“Matt is excited about the return to the Demons and has seen the improved on field performance of the league side over the past 12 months, he wants to be part of the demons resurgence,” Dale Ballantyne stated.

Head Coach, Earl Spalding, is positive about the signing and looks forward to seeing what Matt can do in 2019.
 
"Leadership, experience and some e-factor about his play are all attributes which we associate with Matt. We are looking forward to him influencing the outcome of games while also providing some leadership and guidance to our talented local products, who we are now looking at to take the next step in their WAFL league careers," Earl stated.

NOMINEE – KERRIE-ANN PENDAL

I am a Registered Psychologist and have completed a double major – Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) and Justice studies before completing my Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology and Masters in Health Counselling with over nine years’ experience in providing counselling, psychological services, training and small group workshops as well as working in a range of settings including vocational rehabilitation, drug and alcohol rehabilitation and Employee Assistance Programs. 

I have a passion for the Perth Football Club and started out as a Volunteer in 2010 assisting with the Centurion Lunch and in the office one day per week. I moved into a paid role with staff vacancies and worked my way up to being Business Development Manager, managing the office, internal events, membership, merchandise, social media and the website. I loved my time with the club and interacting with the Staff, Players, Sponsors, Members and Supporters and have met many great friends along the way.

I elected to leave my paid role in November 2016 for personal reasons, however I have remained involved in the Perth Football Club, assisting with the Gala Auction.

My family has always been involved in the Perth Football Club (in some capacity) for as long as I can remember, and I want to take my involvement to the next level and become a Director so that I can continue to show my support and give back to a club and community that has given me so much.

 

NOMINEE – NEIL DARBY

Dear Members

My professional role is Executive Director for the Education Department.

I lead 2400 staff. My role includes staff deployment, selection and leadership of Principals and Managers, to achieve high performance of staff and students and risk management including delivery of infrastructure programs.

My passion is Perth Football Club.

I served for 9 years as the Demons District Chairperson with the role of growing junior player, umpire and volunteer participation. The significant growth in Auskick and school participants and strengthening of many junior clubs has built a pathway to our colts and seniors as well as a number of AFL draftees. From that role I was invited on to the Board and subsequently voted in and appointed Senior Vice President.

Recent roles have included my representation of the Perth FC in the WAFC review of WA Football which led to the recent Zone Boundary Review. I presented a robust case for expansion of our zone, equalisation measures for the Club to address the diversity of our District and to maintain our vital country zone. I expect all measures to be endorsed.

I have taken on the role of membership to sustain our plan to grow an additional 500 members in our 120th Anniversary year.

My passion for the Club is unrelenting. I seek your support to build a winning culture.

NOMINEE – CHRIS BILLINGS

Chris Billings is an experienced marketing professional who has built a successful career working both locally and nationally with a wide variety of Government, corporate and retail businesses.

In his current role as General Manager of Corporate Sports Australia (CSA), a leading Sports Marketing and Mass Participation Event organisation, Chris is responsible for servicing their growing client base by providing exposure and developing opportunities for brands across their event portfolio.  

Prior to joining CSA, Chris was recruited to head up the Perth office of Blaze Advertising, a national marketing and advertising agency, part of Young and Rubicam, a global marketing company.

Chris was required to build the foundations of the Perth office, by growing the client base to a level where it was self-sustainable. His success in this capacity was rewarded when he was also appointed to also head up the South Australian office, travelling weekly between both states to perform his duties.

Chris is involved in a number of sports, particularly football, where he enjoyed a 10 year career at WAFL Level with the Perth Football Club. Chris started at Perth as a 17 year old, captaining the Colts in his second year. Chris made his league debut in 2007, a year where he won the Doug Buckingham Memorial Trophy as the clubs most outstanding young talent.

 

NOMINEE – MARK TREASURE

I have been a passionate member and supporter of the mighty Demons and since becoming a Board member 10 years ago, I have been active at many club and district events and am currently a Vice President of the Club and Director of Branding and Marketing.

During my time on the Board I have:

  • Gained a solid understanding of the operations of a WAFL club and the WA Football Commission;
  • Fostered many strong relationships within the WAFL community;
  • Worked hard to improve the marketing and fundraising areas of the club. I continue to work to improve the communication with members and supporters;
  • Co-ordinated the Club’s annual Gala Auction the Club’s biggest fundraising event that has consistently generated profits in excess of $90,000 each year.

I have worked in sales and advertising for over 25 years and am currently Joint-Managing Director of Media Tonic. The company is involved in media sales and partners with a number of influential businesses across digital, out-of-home and broadcast areas as well as publishing the Football Budget. Media Tonic proudly supports many events at the Perth Football Club.

I believe my experience and contacts in marketing and sales will be advantageous to the Club as it seeks to increase membership, sponsorship and match day attendances.

Accordingly, I would greatly appreciate your vote to enable me to continue to represent you and make a worthwhile contribution to the Perth Football Club.

NOMINEE – TROY COOK

I would like to re-nominate for my position on the board of the Perth Football Club. I have worked hard and diligently in my current position as the Director of Football, assisting the club to implement the necessary programs and structures that allowed us to rise to the challenges and to play finals football.

My focus has been on developing talent within our zone, to create a challenging learning environment, a recruiting strategy that focuses our clubs changing culture, and a leadership focus that demands the best of each player at the club when they wear the Perth Football Club jumper.

The Perth Football Club’s zone has a wealth of Aboriginal people. Assisting the club to secure an Aboriginal Engagement Officer to liaise with family and potential players is a high priority and vital to our club. I feel I am well suited in the pursuit of appointing this person to the role and would like to see it come to fruition in 2019. I would also like to act as a guide and mentor to this person when needed.

I am a passionate past player and life member of this club and I draw on my years of footballing experience to assist the Perth Football Club’s strategic plan. I’m dedicated to listening and acting on behalf of the most important people in this club, the members.

Being a fully paid financial member of the Perth Football Club I would like to be considered for the re-election to the Board of the Club. As a current Director, I have been involved with the Club’s sponsorship activities and I am well versed in the corporate and social activities. I’ve lived and grown up in the Perth Football Club District. I played my junior and senior football while playing 16’s in the Perth District Squad and captained the Perth Football Club Colts Team in 1989.

Nominee: Daryle MANN

Dear Members,

I have had the privilege of serving the Perth Football Club as Club President for the last two years. It is with great pleasure that I submit my nomination to you.

During my time as President, I have worked with the Board and office staff to build a strong foundation for future growth. I am about team and community, two values that are seeing us develop a culture of success.

I am committed to ensuring the PFC is a strong stand-alone member of the WAFL. Off-field, I am dedicated to working tirelessly to guarantee the PFC is successful, developing a strong community.

I am a Financial Adviser and have successfully run my own Practice in South Perth for 20 years. My financial knowledge and experience has helped the Club grow to the solid financial position we are in today.

One of the first projects I commissioned on becoming President was a broad review into the Club. Known as the Cumberland Review, it was the catalyst for much of our improvement in 2018. This review was the foundation for the development of the Club’s Strategic Plan. Some of our focuses have been:

Football

Full support of our Football Department, with an emphasis shifting to developing players from within our Zones. A noticeable improvement in Club culture and commitment saw us have our best season in decades. We are now in a strong position for 2019.

Facilities

I have continued the work started by our late President, Vince Pendal. I am committed to our new facility and, with the help of our CEO and Board, have secured $4 million of funding. The relationships we have built are essential in securing further funding.

Community

2019 will bring a significant focus on engaging and growing our local communities, especially with our local schools. For the longevity of our Club, there is a need to increase our community relationships. Our engagement programs (Coaching Academy, Outside the Locker Room) have proven successful.

Sustainability

This year we will make another profit. I am focussed on ensuring our club remains financially responsible.

Ian Hill & Luke English achieve AFL Draft Dreams

Congratulations to Perth Football Club's Ian Hill and Luke English on a succesful 2018 AFL draft. 

Ian Hill has been drafted to GWS with pick 24. He is class personified, and while his season has not been ideal, Hill has plenty of upside for the future. He rarely fumbles and loves to move the ball along a wing or inside 50. A keen goal sense and a natural nous when it comes to creativity, Hill can create something out of nothing. 

Luke English has been picked by Richmond with pick 62. a light midfielder with excellent run and carry, he is a high-impact player.

“Just know that I’ll give it everything to help my teammates and put my best foot forward,” English said to Tiger fans in a media statement.

“I’ll be ferocious and I’ll use my endurance and my tank to the best of my ability.”

Perth Football Club Football Operations Manager Dale Ballantyne extends his congratulations to Hill and English on being drafted.

"Ian Hill is a great talent who has been with Perth Football Club through his development years. It is great to see “Bobby” on an AFL list and we are sure he will have a positive impact with the GWS Giants," Football Operations manager Dale Ballantyne commented on the draft.

"Luke English has worked extremely hard to achieve his dream of AFL football. He achieved a lot at Perth in his short stay with us and will continue to improve at AFL level. We look forward to seeing the birght futures for the boys."

Michael Bennell awarded 'WAFL Player of the Future' Award

Michael Bennell has been awarded 'WAFL Player of the Future' at the 2018 WA Football Media Awards. 

"A young man presented at the Club in preseason with a focus to achieve his goal of playing senior WAFL footy. The awarded presented to him last night recognises his committment to that focus," CEO Marty Atkins commented.

"Well done Michael. Your Club is proud of your achievements and dedication."

The West Australian Football Commission and WA Football Media Guild hosted the annual WA Football Media Awards at Optus Stadium tonight, Tuesday November 27, to recognise the season’s high achievers both on and off the field.

This included awards for online, print, radio and television media, WAFL and AFL players and coaches, as well as special awards for outstanding service.

Awards were judged in each category by members of the WA Football Media Guild, the West Australian Football Commission, and a combination of the following judging panel members: Tom Atkinson, Ben Cameron, Ken Casellas, Sean Cowan, Steve Gordon, Tim Gossage, Graham Mason, John McGrath, Jo McManus, Paul Murray, Craig Nitschke, Michael O'Brien, Glen Quartermain, Brett Sprigg, Michael Thomson, John Townsend, Peter Vlahos,  Simon White and Basil Zempilas.
