Perth Football Club went down by 15 points to the top of the ladder Peel Thunder on Saturday, with the visitors running out 8.6 (54) to 5.9 (39) winners at Mineral Resources Park.

The Demons were competitive throughout the contest and stayed within touching distance of the competition’s benchmark side. Peel held a narrow advantage at every change, but Perth continued to fight their way back into the contest, with the margin sitting at just 19 points heading into the final term.

Oscar Hine-Baston was outstanding across half back and was deservedly named Best on Ground, collecting 27 disposals, four marks and four tackles. His work in defence was a highlight for the Demons, consistently winning possession and helping transition the ball from the back half.

Charlie Constable was another standout through the midfield, racking up a game high 31 disposals and six tackles, while Brandan Parfitt continued his strong run of form with 21 disposals and five tackles. Corey Byrne and Austin Davis also worked hard around the contest, finishing with 20 disposals each.

The Demons’ defence was again a feature, with Charlie Dean, Baxter Philip and Matthew Taylor all contributing strongly, while William Tilbee continued to impress as a young emerging player with 16 disposals and a game high nine tackles.

Despite having the same number of scoring shots as Peel, Perth were unable to make the most of their opportunities, finishing with 5.9 compared to the Thunder’s 8.6. The Demons were competitive across the ground, but Peel’s greater efficiency in front of goal ultimately proved the difference.

The result was a frustrating one for Perth, who matched the ladder leaders in several key areas but couldn’t quite capitalise on their opportunities. The Demons will take plenty from another competitive performance against one of the competition’s strongest sides as they continue their push towards the business end of the season.
