STEVE ARMSTRONG RETURNS TO LEAD THE DEMONS
After 15 years building his coaching credentials across the WAFL, Steve Armstrong returns to Perth with a strong reputation and a clear vision for the club’s future.
Perth Football Club has appointed Steve Armstrong as its Senior Coach, bringing a highly regarded football figure back to Lathlain Park to lead the Demons into the next chapter of their development.
Armstrong played 97 games for Perth before becoming part of West Coast’s 2006 AFL premiership team.
He brings 15 years of coaching experience across the WAFL, with a background spanning senior coaching, midfield development, leadership and player development.
His coaching career includes roles at Subiaco, Claremont, Swan Districts, Perth and West Perth, as well as involvement with the WA State 18s and senior state sides. His four seasons at Perth as Senior Assistant and Midfield Coach have given him a strong understanding of the club, its people and its expectations.
The appointment comes at an exciting time for the Demons, who have played finals in each of the past two seasons and finished third in 2026. Armstrong will be tasked with building on that progress and developing a team capable of challenging for a premiership.
Perth Football Club President Adrian Barich said Armstrong had emerged as the selection panel’s preferred candidate following an extensive recruitment process led by Derwent Search.
“Steve has earned this opportunity. He’s spent 15 years developing his coaching craft, working across a range of WAFL programs and learning from some highly respected people in football,” Barich said.
“He brings a strong football résumé, a deep understanding of our club and a genuine passion for the Demons. He knows what it means to be a Demon.”
“A key priority for the selection panel was finding a coach who could strengthen the connection between our emerging young players and the senior group, develop our young men and build strong relationships throughout the football program.”
“We believe Steve has the qualities to unite the playing group, get the best out of our people and continue to move this club forward. We’re delighted to welcome him and his family home to Lathlain Park.”
Armstrong said returning to Perth to lead the club was a special opportunity.
“Perth Football Club has always meant a lot to me, so to have the opportunity to return and lead the Demons is incredibly special. I understand what this club means to its people, its members and everyone who loves the red and the black, and I don’t take the responsibility lightly.”
“The playing group has made real progress over the past two seasons, and there’s a strong foundation to build on. My focus will be on bringing our senior players and emerging young talent together, developing our players both on and off the field, and creating an environment built on strong relationships, accountability and a genuine desire to succeed.”
“We want to keep moving this club forward, play competitive and consistent football, and give our members and supporters a team they can be proud of. I’m excited by the opportunity ahead and can’t wait to get started.”
Armstrong will begin working with the playing group immediately as preparations for the 2027 WAFL season get underway.
