Vale Chris Maguire

The Perth Football Club is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of former player Chris Maguire at just 51 years of age.

Chris was a gifted, strong-marking forward and a natural entertainer who could turn a game in a matter of minutes. Across a distinguished WAFL career with Perth and Swan Districts, he played 90 league games and booted 234 goals, earning a reputation as one of the competition’s most dangerous goal-kickers on his day.

Chris began his senior football journey in the colts at East Fremantle, playing in their 1992 premiership victory over Claremont. He was cleared to Perth in 1994, making his league debut, before a stint at Swan Districts. His love of the game then took him to Armadale, where over six seasons he kicked more than 300 goals, jointly won the 2001 Bowden Medal, claimed multiple Footballer of the Year honours and was a key member of the club’s drought-breaking premiership side in 2001.

He returned to Lathlain in 2002 under Stan Magro and enjoyed one of the most productive periods of his career, playing 51 games in three seasons and kicking 136 goals. Chris won Perth’s goal-kicking award three years in a row and in 2004 kicked 60 majors while also proudly representing WA against South Australia in 2006. He later added a further 33 games and 68 goals at Swan Districts, winning their goal-kicking award in 2006 and 2007.

Chris’s passion for football never waned. He coached at Gwynne Park, played in the South West Football League with Eaton Boomers and Bunbury, and also ran out for Boulder City and Kellerberrin-Tammin.

He then moved into Masters football and in 2023 won an EJ Whitten Medal in the 45s division and, in 2024, represented Australia in Ireland in the over-50s team, a testament to his enduring love for the game.

Chris was on the hill at Claremont Oval with many of his former team-mates for last year’s semi-final between his beloved Perth and Claremont.

Chris Maguire was a character, a competitor and a true football man. He will be fondly remembered by teammates, supporters and all who had the pleasure of watching him play.

The Perth Football Club extends its heartfelt condolences to Chris’s family, friends and former teammates during this incredibly difficult time.
