Perth’s finals campaign has taken a setback after falling to Claremont by 17 points in Saturday’s WAFL Qualifying Final at Revo Fitness Stadium.
The Tigers started strongly, taking a 12-point lead into quarter-time before extending their advantage to 11 points at the main break. Perth continued to battle hard and created plenty of opportunities throughout the contest but was unable to make up the difference on the scoreboard.
Claremont maintained control during the third quarter, extending its lead to 21 points heading into the final term. The Demons continued to fight until the final siren but ultimately fell short, with the Tigers claiming a 12.5 (77) to 8.12 (60) victory.
Corey Byrne and Charlie Constable led the way for Perth with 23 disposals each, while Byrne was influential in helping drive the Demons’ ball movement. Riley Wills was another important contributor, collecting 20 disposals and kicking a goal.
Zac Harding was named Perth’s Trademark Player, producing a hard-working performance across the contest and collecting 15 disposals, including nine handballs.
Noah Cachard continued his strong form with 14 disposals and three marks, while Charlie Dean collected 14 touches and contributed six marks in defence. Austin Davis also worked hard around the contest, finishing with 19 disposals and three tackles.
Up forward, Aaron Clarke led the way with three goals, while Blake Schlensog made a strong impact on his return to League football, kicking two majors. Riley Wills also added a goal for the Demons.
Despite the loss, Perth generated plenty of opportunities and finished with 54 inside 50s to Claremont’s 40, while also recording more scoring shots. The Demons won the disposal count 306 to 290, but inaccurate kicking in front of goal proved costly.
Claremont’s efficiency ultimately proved the difference, kicking at over 70 per cent accuracy compared with Perth’s 40 per cent.
The loss means Perth will now have to regroup quickly as the Demons turn their attention to their next finals challenge against East Perth.
