Perth have secured their place in the WAFL Qualifying Final after holding off West Perth by five points at HIF Health Insurance Oval on Saturday.
The Falcons started strong, but Perth quickly found their rhythm to take a seven-point lead into quarter time after a 4.3 opening term. The Demons continued to build in the second quarter, extending their advantage to 14 points at half time after another accurate period in front of goal.
West Perth refused to go away, fighting back in the third term to bring the margin back to just eight points heading into the final quarter. The Demons held their nerve when it mattered most, keeping the Falcons at bay for the final quarter to come away with a hard-fought 10.14 (74) to 10.9 (69) victory.
Charlie Constable was outstanding through the midfield and was rewarded with Best on Ground honours after a huge performance. The midfielder racked up a remarkable 39 disposals, six marks and five tackles, while also contributing seven inside 50s.
Corey Byrne was another strong performer with 24 disposals, while Noah Cachard collected 26 touches and five marks. Matthew Taylor and Oscar Hine-Baston also continued their strong form, finishing with 23 disposals apiece.
The Demons’ backline again stood up under pressure, with Baxter Philip collecting 21 disposals and eight marks, Charlie Dean recording 17 touches and nine marks, and Jake Watson adding 13 disposals and six marks.
Up forward, Jesse Glass-McCasker led the way with three goals, making an immediate impact in his return to the League side. Jack Bodle also found the scoreboard twice, while Jack Kluske and Corey Byrne added important majors.
Perth finished the game with 54 inside 50s to West Perth’s 50 and 386 disposals to the Falcons’ 378, continuing to create opportunities despite the contest remaining tight throughout the second half.
The five-point victory sees Perth finish the home-and-away season with an important win and, more importantly, secure a place in the Qualifying Final next Saturday at Revo Fitness Stadium against Claremont.
