Sharks’ second half too strong for Demons

Monday, August 15, 2016 - 10:19 AM by Matthew Dower

EAST Fremantle’s four goal blitz midway through the third term proved pivotal in their win over Perth on Saturday afternoon, with the Demons going down by __ points.

The Sharks opened the game up in the third after leading at half-time by sixteen points. After Perth kicked the first goal of the third term at the eighth minute mark through Marshall Jones, the Sharks got a run on kicking ten of the last fourteen goals of the game.

The Demons were without key personnel for their clash with the Sharks, with reigning Sandover medallist Aidan Tropiano missing through illness and key defender Brent Latch nursing a leg injury.

Brett Wolfenden got the home side off to an ideal start with a goal on the run inside the first five minutes of the game.

However the Sharks had more use of the ball in the first term having nine more possessions and kicking the extra major to the first change, going in with an 11 point advantage.

The Demons managed to put the clamps on the hard-running Sharks in the second through sheer effort to get their hands on the ball first.

Clint Jones and Cody Ninyette kicked goals early to bring the margin to just two points midway through the term.

However a costly turnover on the forward fifty turned into an East Fremantle goal after a fifty-metre penalty was awarded to George Hampson, who kicked two goals in quick fashion to maintain a healthy lead at the long break.

It was the Sharks who came out switched on in the third with their precise ball movement through the midfield. The Sharks kicked the final four goals of the quarter, including two from veteran Brett Peake.

The Sharks were led by Liam Anthony who had 36 possessions in the middle of the ground, even more so in the final term where he helped the away side push away even further.

Cam Eardley has prolific in the midfield as well with 26 possessions, while Matthew Jupp (25), Jamie McNamara (24 and nine marks), Sean Henson and Brett Peake all played pivotal roles around the ground.

Liam McKenna had the ball the most times for the Demons with 28 possessions. Jones and Wolfenden both had 26 possessions apiece, whilst captain Dene White (22) and Julian Jacobs (21) both worked tirelessly throughout the afternoon.

The result was hardly ideal, given the colts and reserves both lost by margins of more than 50 points respectively. The colts remain a game clear on the ladder, whilst Perth remains in seventh spot on the reserves ladder and eighth in the league.

However all sides will be looking to make amends from this weekend’s results and get back in the winners circles next week when they take on Swan Districts at Bassendean Oval next Saturday afternoon, with bounce down at 2.15pm.
