Austin Davis, 2019 Goal of the Year: Reserves
As the club prepares for the delayed 2020 season, we caught up with young-gun Austin Davis to chat about that goal, life in COVID and preparing for the season.
2019 Goal of the Year for the Reserves. It was an absolute cracker in Round 12 v East Perth. Tell us about the moment.
It was my second goal for the season, I was stoked to even kick one at that point. I saw an opening to just go for a long as I could and got lucky.
You made your senior debut in 2019. What was the highlight of the 2019 season for you?
I had a few highlights last year. Playing my first game with the seniors, getting a televised game and my first win against East Freo in the League side. There is a bit of a rivalry there and it was good to get that one over the line.
Coming off these highlights and into a long and uncertain preseason can’t have been easy. How did you keep motivated during this time?
I’m just motivated by the goal of playing more senior footy. I’m really just keen to get out there and play some more games and build on 2019.
How did you find training during lockdown?
While the season was postponed it was difficult to keep going, for me it was just not knowing what was coming and where footy would end up this year. I focussed on keeping up my running, doing some weights at home and having a kick at the park.
I spent a fair bit of time on my parent’s farm and did a lot of running with my brother, which definitely made training easier.
Outside of footy, what has life during COVID been like?
I work at Athletes Foot, so there wasn’t really any work. I was really lucky that I could spend time with the family, who made it a lot easier.
How did it feel finding out the 2020 season will start in August?
It’s been a really long preseason so it’s a relief to know the season will be going ahead. I’m looking forward to the season starting and I’m excited about the prospect of what we can deliver as a team. I think the whole playing group has had a really solid preseason and I’m excited about playing with the group.
Anything you would like to say to the Perth loyals?
Thanks for sticking with the Club through this tough time. Looking forward to seeing you during the 2020 season.
