Slick Subi too quick for Demons
A fast running Subiaco side clearly showed why they are on top of the WAFL ladder as they out ran Perth for much of the day to run out winners by 34 points at Lathlain Park on Saturday.
Perth Captain Paul Bevan won the toss and kicked to the northern end of the ground. It was the Lions though that kicked the first goal through Simon Moore in the opening minute of play. In a fast paced match small forward Joel Leeson booted the Demon’s first major at the 8 minute mark.
From the half way mark of the term though Subiaco forward Shane Yarran hit a real purple patch to boot 3 quick goals and help the Lions to a lead of 19 points at quarter time after kicking 6 goals 1 to 3 goals 2.
The second term again saw the bigger bodies in the midfield led by Jason Bristow and Kyal Horsley dominate the centre clearances as the visitors soon opened up a lead of 44 points. The Demons slowly started to work their way back into the match again led by a hard working Dene White and Cale Morton who was starring on his wing.
Pocket rocket Callum Collard soccered a clever goal and then this was soon followed by 2 quick majors just before half time to Hayden Busher as Perth cut the lead to 26 points at half time after managing 5 goals for the term.
After finishing the second term with the momentum of the match the Demons really needed the first goal but unfortunately try as they might it was again the Subi forwards that had all the answers as they kicked 2 quick goals in the opening 5 minutes of the half.
While the Demons had plenty of possessions they just simply could not finish their good work up forward as the Lion’s continually ran the ball out of the backline. While Michael Sinclair was keeping the dangerous Yarran quiet the home side could only score 1 goal in a low scoring quarter coming from Captain Bevan.
At three quarter time Subiaco held a comfortable lead of 41 points. Perth was coming home with the use of the breeze in the last term but seemed to lack pace around the ground. After starting in the backline Brennan Stack moved forward in the last term and kicked the first goal of the last quarter.
The home side were certainly fighting the game out and the move of Stack back into the forward line certainly proved beneficial as he kicked his second goal of the term. As both sides began to tire Subiaco simply had too big a lead for the Demons to peg back and ending up winning comfortably by 34 points.
In the end Perth simply lacked a tall target up forward all day as Subi’s defence ran the ball out too easily most of the day.
Cale Morton certainly played an outstanding game for Perth collecting 34 touches and clearly outplaying former Demon Jarrod Kayler-Thomson on a centre wing. White continued his outstanding form and was well supported by Manuel, and special mention to Sinclair who managed to keep Yarran quiet after quarter time.
Next week Perth plays the Sharks at Lathlain Park in a must win game to stay in touch with the top four.
Goals: Busher, Leeson, Stack, Bevan, Collard 2, C, Morton 1.
Best: C. Morton, White, Manuel, Sinclair, Ugle, Stack.
