Kirby Bentley Cup
Last Friday night the Demons District and Thornlie Junior Football Club hosted the inaugural Kirby Bentley Cup indigenous youth girls football carnival under lights at Tom Bateman Reserve.
The best indigenous girls from around the state – including Goldfields and Geraldton put their skills to the test for matches against the Perth metro districts with over 150 participants in total. The cup is named after Women’s superstar (Melbourne FC) and WA’s own Kirby Bentley. Kirby attended the night and is a great mentor for the girls.
Our Perth Squad was led by rookie coach and current Central TAFE student Lakeisha Yarran, Team manager and District assistant Ashley Fitzgerald and our runner was Brett Woods, also one of our AFL sports ready trainees.
The girls battled hard and ended up with a 1-2 record. While they didn’t come home with the cup they played some outstanding football and everyone involved learned plenty and had a great time doing so.
South Fremantle and East Fremantle progressed to an all derby grand final. The Bulldogs prevailed to take home the cup. There were 10 best on ground players (one from each team) who were all awarded signed Kirby Bentley Footballs and a spot in the WA Kick start team who will head to the Gold Coast in September.
The Demons District would especially like to thank Mick Fraser (Thornlie JFC President) and his team for their tireless work in helping organise and host this great event!
