GALA HALL OF FAME LAUNCH
The Perth Football Club will start the 2015 season on the front foot by honouring past champions and outstanding officials at the unveiling of the club's Hall of Fame on Saturday March 14 at Lathlain Park.
Thirty-five players and officials will be honoured in the initial intake at a gala dinner to be held under a giant marquee on the oval, where many of the players thrilled thousands of fans with their skills.
The club's board has given the green light for what promises to be a glittering event after a proposal from a sub-committee led by former champion player and Simpson Medallist, Allan Stiles.
Club president Vince Pendal said that Perth, which joined the senior league in 1899, had been a trendsetter in Western Australian football. Not only had a big number of players produced by the club gone on to achieve national recognition, but many officials had also been leaders at both the state and national levels.
"We believe it is timely for a club with our great tradition to single them out for this special honour," Mr Pendal said.
Allan Stiles's sub-committee has been charged with selecting a short list for consideration for inclusion in the first intake. Sub-committee members have included former captains Pat Astone and Wim Rosbender, veteran coach Jack Ensor, life members Richard Camm and Brian Sweetapple, Sandover Medallist Ian Miller, and ex full-back, Brian Conduit.
"This is one of the toughest assignments imaginable," Mr Stiles said. "The challenge is to do the early champions and administrators justice. At the same time we need to acknowledge our champions from the post war premiership teams. It's not easy."
In addition to the foundation Hall of Fame members, the names of a select group of the "Mightiest Demons" will be announced at the function.
