Past Players Gear Up For Another Big Year
With the start of the McDonalds WAFL Premiership Season this weekend the Past Players & Officials Association are setting themselves for a big year, both on and off the field.
The PP&OA are a significant part of the Perth Football Club. “I keep reminding everybody to spread the word and attend our functions as best they can as one of our main roles is fundraising towards the Perth Football Club in general and also the juniors”, said PP&OA President Wayne Koch.
“We pump about twenty to twenty five thousand dollars back into the club either directly or indirectly every year.”
Other PP&OA’s aren’t as lucky to have the same relationship that the Perth PP&OA and the Perth Football Club share.
“Some of the other past players organisations are at loggerheads with their clubs and do not do anything for them.”
“Whilst our Half Time and other functions are becoming legendary, we are proud of our custodianship of the Redlegs to Demons History Centre upstairs as well as the memorabilia and Murals in the Rovers Lounge.”
If you are thinking about joining the Perth PP&OA this year then all you have to do is approach an existing member, get in touch with one of the committee members and be willing to lend a hand if needed.
“Look out for any of our eclectic group such as Mike Hawthorne, Brian Sweetapple, Greg Dart, Mark Thornber, Keith Chapman, Greg Clatworthy, Archie Rose, Steve Ransted, Bill Murphy and Allan Corry. All will be resplendent in our traditional “Lace Up” pocketed Polo Shirt of excellence.”
“We’re not saying that they have to be on the committee but as long as they’re willing to help out every now and then by selling some raffle tickets or assisting with the race day or even helping clean up at half time then we are more than happy to have them on board.”
“We like to have a broad and diverse member base that hopefully we can get ideas from to improve the PP&OA.”
With many half time events to look forward to there is also the usual stuff going on such as the Redlegs Thursday night bar which operates out of the Presidents Lounge and starts at 5pm sharp.
Here you can enjoy a few beers with fellow supporters while watching the team train as well as participate in ‘chase the ace’.
“There’s plenty to look forward to this year with our regular Redlegs Bar, our Mock Race Day and the AFL Grand Final Function.”
