Demons Improve But Still Go Down To The Lions
Perth showed signs of improvement against Subiaco on the weekend but it was the Lions ability to make the most of their chances in front of goal and slightly better ball use throughout the day which led them to a 36-point victory.
The Demons made eight changes for the game and handed debuts to Scott Doncon and Ashley Boyes who were both solid players on the day.
The Lions defence made things difficult for Perth going forward, keeping them to just three goals for the game.
Both sides were poor with their skills in the first quarter with the first goal of the game going to Shane Yarran who kicked truly after the siren.
Things looked more promising for the Demons in the second quarter as they kicked the first goal but from there Subiaco kicked the next three goals, extending their lead to 22-points at half time.
The Lions kicked another four goals in the third term while Perth could only manage three behinds giving them a 46-point lead heading into the last quarter.
The Demons fought right to the end though and kept Subiaco goalless in the last quarter while kicking two goals themselves.
Aidan Tropiano (32 possessions, 5 marks) was the best player for Perth while there were solid contributions from Brett Wolfenden (22 disposals, 6 marks, 3 I50’s, 1 goal), Brent Latch (19 possessions, 9 marks), Jarred Bell (19 disposals, 5 marks), Rowan Brookes (16 possessions, 12 marks, 5 tackles, 5 I50’s), Ashley Boyes (16 disposals, 5 marks, 1 goal) and Kurtis Chester (16 possessions, 5 marks, 3 tackles, 1 goal).
In the minor grades the reserves went down by 68-points and the colts came from behind to record a 22-point win.
Liam McKenna (30 disposals, 8 marks, 10 tackles, 4 I50’s) pushed his case for an automatic recall to the league side after he was dropped for being late to a recovery session while Mitch Morton (26 possessions, 7 marks) was good in his first game back since injury. Daniel Arangio kicked three goals and could come into the team to help solve the Demons forward line problems.
