TROPIANO WINS SANDOVER IN THRILLING FINISH
Perth’s ball magnet Aidan Tropiano won the 2015 Sandover Medal in an absolutely thrilling count last night.
Tropiano becomes the first Perth player since 2009 when Ross Young won the award. The 22 year old Geraldton product switched over from East Fremantle to the Demons in the middle part of last year and had an immediate impact in the Perth midfield.
After claiming the Butcher Medal recently for Perth’s Best and Fairest Tropiano went into this year’s Sandover Medal count as one of the favorites. Tropiano led for most of the night and won with 45 votes, however was overtaken late by South Fremantle’s Ashton Hams who finished in second place on 44 votes with Subiaco’s Sam Menegola storming home to finish in third place on 41 votes.
Tropiano was still 3 votes behind Hams entering into the last round against East Fremantle and in a losing game still managed to pick up 4 votes after gathering 37 possessions to win by 1 vote over Hams and record one of the most exciting wins in recent Sandover Medal history.
The win was even more remarkable considering Perth won only two matches for the season, however Tropiano polled consistently well throughout the count with the Umpires rewarding him during the season for his efforts.
The Perth Football Club and all Members and Supporters congratulate Aidan on his outstanding season and recognise this wonderful achievement in winning the 2015 Sandover Medal.
